Open Your Heart

By supporting Go Red, you inspire women to make healthy lifestyle changes, mobilize communities, and shape policies to save lives. When you attend a luncheon and get involved as a volunteer and supporter, you help to improve the health of women in your community. You make it possible for more women to receive the lifesaving information they need about their risk for heart disease and stroke and empower them to live stronger, healthier lives.

Additionally, your support for the Go Red movement will help bring us closer to the American Heart Association’s 2020 Impact Goal: To improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent.

2019 Go Red for Women Featured Survivor

This year’s featured survivor is Kenna Green, who was born in 2016 as a happy and healthy newborn child. But just shy of her one-month birthday, she began experiencing health complications. After several days of vomiting, she was diagnosed with a stomach bug and was admitted to a nearby hospital due to dehydration. As Kenna’s health continued to worsen, it was discovered that her heart was functioning at about 10% capacity. She was then diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, a life-threatening disease that affects the heart’s ability to pump blood.

Kenna was flown to Ft. Worth for treatment immediately after her diagnosis, and within hours the words “possible heart transplant” were mentioned to her parents. During her extensive hospital stay, treatment was focused on getting her heart to function to avoid a heart transplant. At just 7 weeks old, Kenna underwent open heart surgery to repair her severely damaged mitral valve in hopes that it would also help her heart function on oral medications.

After two months of moving in and out of the Cardiac ICU, Kenna’s heart finally stabilized and she was finally able to come home. Her heart function is now maintained by several medications, but she is now a relatively healthy and active toddler.

Kenna’s story, and the stories of millions of other heart disease victims, is the reason why the American Heart Association is so passionate about improving cardiovascular health around the world. With your support, we can educate communities, fund life-saving research, and overcome barriers to preventing experiences just like these.

Thank you for opening your heart to support Go Red For Women.
